  • There are different types of bunionectomies depending on the severity of the bunion, patient’s lifestyle and post op ambulation protocols. In this XRAY, the same patient had two different bunionectomy techniques on each foot: Lapiplasty on the right and Crossroads MIS on the left. Patient had great outcomes on bilateral sides and was fully satisfied with the procedures.

  • Ingrown nails happen when your nail grows into your skin instead of over it. Ingrown nail can have major complications including:
•Bone Infection
•Foot Ulcers
•Gangrene(decaying tissue). This is rare.
• Losing a limb
Let the doctor know if:
You have signs of infections, like severe pain or pus.
The pain doesn’t go away after you treat the nail.
You have diabetes, which raises your risk of complications from foot infections.

  • Hallux varus is a condition where the great toe moves to the medial side of the first metatarsal head. It is usually caused by surgical overcorrection of a bunion, but can also be caused by trauma, or by neurological or inflammatory joint diseases. The main complaint in these patients, other than the clinical appearance, is difficulty fitting into shoes. Taping or splinting the toe may be helpful if the deformity is flexible, but the most definitive treatment is surgical management. If the deformity is rigid or semirigid and joint degeneration has been initiated, the most effective and predictable treatment is first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis. In this case, the patient had her bunion overcorrected by another surgeon and now corrected by Dr. Oconnell.
